I am an Extended Confirmed Wikipedia editor who has brought many cryptocurrency articles to and removed many cryptocurrency articles from Wikipedia. Let me explain the Cardano <-> Wikipedia problem from Wikipedia's perspective.

I wrote like 12 paragraphs, but I deleted those and am just going to sum this up in point form instead.
TL;DR at the bottom.
I will not go into whether or not I agree with all of this, I'm just telling you how it is. Also, everything on Wikipedia is a goddamn power game, I've been in crypto debates between 6+ administrators and several extended confirmed editors over so much as a single word on the Bitcoin Cash page. A bad fight will burn your unofficial editing leniency on some of the higher articles, just to give you an idea of how toxic it is there.
If you want to covertly edit cryptocurrency articles, you need to learn Wikipedia.
TL;DR: Articles have to be notable. Notable does not mean marketcap, research, users, or anything else - it means that Mainstream news outlets have picked up on it, and have covered everything needed for the article.
Feel free to AMA about Wikipedia editing and how toxic it is.

Traditional Mining vs Green Staking: How UMI Cares for the Planet

Traditional Mining vs Green Staking: How UMI Cares for the Planet

https://preview.redd.it/fcymiab2fed51.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a32e38290d6f8048ba7cc982bc2963369642eb7a
Cryptocurrencies are about a major contribution to the transformation of the existing financial system. They can dramatically change the world and be of great benefit to humankind. But looking for benefits mustn't do harm to the environment.
We've taken up this theme for a reason. It is indeed possible to do harm. In fact, harm is already being done. Do you want to know in what way? By traditional mining, which is necessary to maintain the Bitcoin network, and thousands of other Proof-of-Work-based cryptocurrencies.
Negative impact of traditional mining
In order to maintain the Bitcoin network or other PoW-based cryptocurrencies, miners have to solve complex computational math problems — by doing so they verify the authenticity of transactions and add valid ones to the blockchain. This process is dubbed mining and requires extensive computing resources.
The need to compete to solve a mathematical puzzle and receive a reward makes people use more and more powerful equipment. This is how new bitcoins are generated. With the cryptocurrency boom, harmless mining on computers turned into an endless race among miners. Today miners not only buy high-performance computers. Some miners create farms consisting of energy-consuming ASIC devices while others use huge plants to mine bitcoins.

A mining farm consisting of thousands of ASIC devices. Source.
As you know, intensive computing power requires elevated power expenses and leads to air pollution and a waste of natural resources. This poses a serious problem. Nowadays electric power stations, which are thermal power plants (TPP), burn fossil fuel, such as coal or natural gas, to produce electricity.
This process causes CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions which adversely affect the biosphere — mining contributes to the greenhouse effect which heats the planet up. This consequently causes a global warming effect with its associated impacts on the environment and may pose threats to life on the planet. What is more, every minute we are breathing the same polluted air, thereby being at risk of a bunch of diseases and complications. All these factors shorten life expectancy for us and our children. Air pollution cause a great deal of premature deaths
The more carbon dioxide gets into the environment, the more harm it does. Carbon dioxide is a harmful by-product of industrial activity. The biting irony is that we use natural resources to generate these emissions, and these resources have limits too. Traditional mining significantly exacerbates the global problem and the situation has been deteriorating in recent years.
The effects of carbon footprint are already being felt
There are, undoubtedly, a lot of other factors that cause global environmental degradation, but the impact of mining should never be ignored. Bitcoin mining is estimated to produce as much carbon dioxide as that produced by industries of Estonia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Jordan, or Sri Lanka.
The entire bitcoin network is responsible for 22-22.9 million tons of CO2 per year — just think and try to imagine how much it is. Chinese miners represent about half (47%) of emissions. In China energy is cheap as it's produced by coal-fired thermal power plants. Once we add emissions produced by mining other cryptos, the numbers will double!

Powerful mining equipment. Source.
Two years ago, Nature Research journal published an article regarding Bitcoin emissions. It said: "We cannot predict the future of Bitcoin, but projected Bitcoin usage, should it follow the rate of adoption of other broadly adopted technologies, could alone produce enough CO2 emissions to push warming above 2 °C within less than three decades." Two years later, we can see the researchers' concerns had the ground — digital gold keeps to be mined with the same enthusiasm as well as the planet keeps to be polluted. "It [Bitcoin] alone could produce enough emissions to raise global temperatures as soon as 2033, " warn a group of researchers.
As an alternate solution, miners are encouraged to use renewable energy (wind, solar, etc.) — which can make bitcoin mining more environmentally friendly. Unfortunately, renewable energy sources account for just a small share of global energy which makes them impossible to be used widely. Moreover, in the pursuit of profit, miners don't seem particularly eager to get rid of profitable equipment which cost them a fortune.
Nonetheless, the fact that modern cryptocurrencies disapprove environment-damaging mining lets us hope for the early improvement of the situation. UMI is one of these cryptocurrencies.
UMI is a green cryptocurrency based on smart contract
Not all cryptocurrencies use computing power to generate new coins. For example, there are cryptocurrencies based on Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and Proof-of-Authority (PoA) technology. UMI is just like that.
As a substitute for mining and to incite users, UMI uses Staking Smart Contract which allows generating new coins with no energy expenses and powerful equipment. No waste of natural resources. Staking technology is perfectly safe for the planet. This is the latest technological development loop of crypto industry.

https://preview.redd.it/wpgh5cmoged51.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=761dd09821e16924dfeeb7db8e65b6a66e50c5d5
UMI can be definitely called an environmentally friendly cryptocurrency as it has no negative impact on the environment. Today this is of greatest importance for all of us. UMI staking neither endangers human health nor harms the environment. In other words, we are protecting the planet and all the people that inhabit it. This is something we can be really proud of. Because the environment influences our health, and good health is the most important thing in life.
As a final note, we would like to say that adhering closely to their ideology, the UMI team collaborates only with environmentally conscious partners who are concerned with the protection of the natural world. This was the main reason for choosing the ROY Club as our partner. We are certain this will be productive cooperation which will make this world a better place.
Join in and invite all your friends — together we can create new UMI coins using eco-friendly staking and care for our planet!
Best regards, UMI Team!

The Saturn Time Cube (MEGATHREAD) Part 2

So we left off asking ourselves the question: what will happen when literally everything is linked up to the cube? In order to answer that question I think we should first take a step back and ask how it will happen.
If you’re familiar with the Bible you know that before the apocalypse begins there will be a world leader known as the antichrist. The antichrist will supposedly implement a new monetary system, one enforced by a certain ‘mark’.
“He causes all, both great and small, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark.” — Revelation 13
Some conspiracy theorists think this mark will be a computer chip implanted in your hand. This technology already exists, and some people are actually already utilizing it.
https://www.scmp.com/news/world/europe/article/2145896/thousands-people-sweden-get-microchip-implants-new-way-life
People get this chip because it’s convenient. You no longer have to carry around your ID or your credit cards. You’ll never lose them either, because they’re... attached to your body.
However, in order to make the chip mandatory, the first thing that has to happen is the eradication of all paper money. This is already happening. Most currency existing today is digital. In fact, it’s around 90%.
https://m.timesofindia.com/12-weird-but-true-facts-about-technology/92-of-The-worlds-currency-is-digital/photostory/51422304.cms
I believe cryptocurrency, you know shit like bitcoin, is major step in the direction of a cashless society. Will bitcoin be the new dollar? I don’t think so. But I do think there is a company out there paving the way for whatever it might be. That company is Chainlink.
Now that you know a bit about Saturn’s symbols, you can see why I find this company a bit creepy. But the weirdness doesn’t stop with their logos, it goes much deeper.
https://static.turbosquid.com/Preview/2018/02/07__08_55_26/chainlink02.jpeg6637B8AF-4C37-4977-8BE6-B3431444A3F3Default.jpg
First of all, the origins of Chainlink are a bit sketchy. What was supposed be a small startup, was given accolades by the big boys at the World Economic Forum.
https://m.imgur.com/LINKTrade3m9uC
Not only that but they are already working with the infamous SWIFT system. SWIFT, or the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, is a vast messaging network used by banks all over the world. To me this sounds like the infrastructure of a one world economic system.
They also recently aquired the Town Crier project. Look familiar?
https://tech.cornell.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/town-crier_BAC-logo.png
https://i0.wp.com/www.whats-your-sign.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/SaturnSymbolMeaning.jpg?fit=1600%2C987&ssl=1
But even more strange, is the fact that one of Chainlink’s advisors, Ari Juels, seems to belong to a cult, the Cult of Demeter! He even references it on his personal webpage.
https://www.arijuels.com/whats-the-banner-about/
Demeter was the goddess of the harvest, agriculture, fertility and sacred law. Like we discussed earlier, Saturn was known for the same things. Saturn was also known as the god with a thousand names and was both male and female, so it is possible that Demeter was a personification of the ringed planet. However, this doesn’t make much of a difference. It’s still weird.
The cult of Demeter is a very old thing. It began in ancient Greece and was known for it’s yearly ceremonies where new members were initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries. There is not much known about them, except that they stressed the importance of the cycle of descending into the underworld and returning anew. They tried their best to keep all of their rites, ceremonies, and beliefs a secret.
Ari Juels also wrote a bizarre novel called Tetrakyts. It’s about a secret cult of latter day followers of Pythagoras who are performing cyberattacks around the world. The numerology obsessed cyber terrorists believe they are oracles doing the work of God.
https://www.arijuels.com/fiction/
An oracle is a priest or priestess who acts as a medium for prophecy to be spoken through. Thousands of years ago, people would travel far and wide to ask them about the future. Chainlink literally calls itself an ‘oracle network’. Does Ari see himself as one of the cultists in his book?
The name of his book is a play on the word tetractys. The tetractys, or tetrad, is a mystical symbol and it was very important to the secret worship of Pythagoreanism. Pythagoras believed God was numbers.
Pythagoras, like those in the cult of Demeter, believed in reincarnation. He believed between each cycle of rebirth was a period of 216 years, which is the number six cubed, or 6³, which brings us back to the cube and 666.
So let’s pretend these people are paving the way to global cashless society. What else would need to happen? What about the mark on the forehead? Well, have you heard of Elon Musk’s Neuralink?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuralink
This new product is literally trying to link our brains up with our smartphones. As if we didn’t use them enough. I don’t think this is the mark of the beast, but I do think the technology is carving out the path towards it.
Any type of technology being implanted in my body is a scary thought. What if there’s a glitch or something? I think this technology will eventually be used for mind control.
Mind control technology already exists. Can you imagine how much easier it could be done if everyone had a chip in their brain? I believe those who take the mark will become a part of a hivemind, like the Borg from Star Trek, who ironically travel around in a cube!
https://patents.google.com/patent/US6506148B2/en
The hivemind is already happening. Everyone’s thoughts are constantly being shaped by the subliminal programming and propaganda the television and radio feed them. I hate to say it, schools to blame as well. Ever wonder why you wear a black cube on your head at your gradual indoctrination ceremony? Whoops, I mean graduation...
Scientists estimate by the year 2045 humans will be able to upload their consciousness into the ‘cloud’ or onto a computer or robotic body and live forever. I don’t know about you, but living forever sounds like Hell, and that might be the meaning of the mark sending people straight to the fiery furnace.
http://2045.com
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2045_Initiative
The new virtual reality game Observation and Netflix movie 2036 Origin Unknown show us this merging of man with machine and it’s affiliation with Saturn. Spoiler alert for the next two paragraphs.
In Observation, a woman and her AI companion crash land their space ship inside Saturn’s hexagonal storm. They find themselves on an alternate Earth where all possible timelines have merged into one. It’s here that they become one entity.
In 2036 Origin Unknown a massive black cube is found on Mars. Again, a woman and her AI companion are trying to study it. After a series of events that results in the nuclear destruction of planet earth, it is revealed that the woman was inside the cube the whole time and that she was actually a copy of her real self being tested by the AI over and over again.
Is this the game we’ve been playing for all of time? Are they creating a simulation within the simulation to further trap us in a hall of mirrors? We might already have the mark. Just take a look at what our DNA is made of.
http://www.mostholyplace.com/wpimages/wp5386c9a0_01_1a.jpg
Without the mark we can not buy or sell, or rather, we can not participate in commerce. Commerce is defined as intercourse. Without your carbon based body you could not have sex and reproduce. In fact, your birth certificate is really a bank note, which means you, the citizen are what is known in the stock market as a commodity.
So how do we escape this time loop, this serpent biting its own tail? How do we hop off the wheel? I hinted at it earlier, but if this thread gets just as good as a reaction as the last one, I will continue the series. Thank you for reading.

Understanding BIP149, redeployment of Segwit with BIP8

I recently published BIP149 and would like to take a few moments to explain the details of this proposal.
BIP149 is a completely new deployment of segwit, which I propose if the current BIP9/BIP141/143/147 segwit deployment fails to lockin/activate by November 15th.
BIP149 cannot be run on mainnet now, and there is code in the reference implementation to prevent it from running. It is incompatible with the current segwit deployment on purpose to remove unnecessary complications.
Essentially, the idea is, if the current segwit deployment fails to activate by Nov 15th, we can release new software that has BIP149. This uses BIP8 to activate segwit by July 2018. Miners will still be able to trigger activation by 95% threshold signalling as normal. In the 8 months from November to July 2018, nodes will be able to upgrade to BIP149. If segwit is not MASF activated by July 2018, there will be enough of the economy running BIP149 that nodes can begin enforcement. What will actually happen is on the first retarget after July 4th, the BIP8 state machine will switch to LOCKED_IN status for two weeks, and then on the following retarget, ACTIVATION will occur. The rationale here is in 5 months we achieved 70% saturation of witness capable nodes, so by the time segwit timesout with all the urgency and demand people feel for segwit, we can expect them to upgrade at least as fast, if not much faster. I have spoken with a number of developers who think this is a reasonable assumption.
Background, I had hoped to be able to release a BIP that can be deployed concurrently now with segwit, but, there are various technical complications in implementing it cleanly and making it easily reviewable. I had various feedback from others in previous iterations and in order to get the widest support from developers especially concerned with predictable results and thus safety, I came to the conclusion that the BIP will get the widest support by not attempting any shortcuts and by removing all complexity. I know many people want segwit now, but, I think we should just bite the bullet and do it the BIP149 way. I already made a shortcut BIP with BIP148. I will discuss the pros and cons at the end.
Back to BIP149, this is a completely new redeployment with a new service bit NODE_UAWITNESS and new compact block protocol version - doing this avoids many gotchyas which I will explain below:
Currently, segwit capable nodes advertize the NODE_WITNESS service bit and preferentially peer with other NODE_WITNESS nodes. Post activation, segwit-active nodes will then know who they should relay witness blocks to and who they should relay old style stripped blocks to. The assumption is if I am a NODE_WITNESS node and segwit has activated, then other NODE_WITNESS nodes will also be segwit activated. We cannot reuse NODE_WITNESS because when BIP149 activates, they would believe non-BIP149 NODE_WITNESS nodes were also active. Using a new service bit, and effectively starting a new deployment as if the previous deployment doesnt exist, is the most predictable and trouble free way to go about it.
Additionally, BIP149 is compatible with existing mining software by reusing the "segwit" name and deployment chainparams (it's not possible to have two deployments with the same name, one expired and one pending/active, due to how versionbits is implemented). In short, if the current segwit deployment fails to activate, we can reuse parts to maintain compatibility, while changing the bare minimum to remove any conflicts with old nodes. It's clean, predictable and easy to review.
BIP148 IS NOT BIP149
Remember BIP148 is exceptional, it's NOT what a usual UASF BIP should look like. A normal UASF if effectively activation on a predetermined date in the future (a flag day). BIP8 combines BIP9 miner signalling with a flagday if MASF does not occur.
How is BIP149 different to BIP148? So BIP148 is a UASF which can be used in two ways. (a) The economy can run BIP148 and basically force miners to signal for segwit, thus activating the current segwit deployment. Or, (b) a majority of miners, 60% or so, could run it and censor other miners who do not signal segwit, thus causing the current segwit to deploy. In method (a) a chain split will occur if any miners do not upgrade, and given the fact there are always absentee miners and pool operators, this is quite likely. It's the economy vs hash power saying "if you dont signal, your blocks will not be worth anything because we will reject them". In the case of (b) you have a majority of hashpower, who could use their majority to orphan any non signalling miners. This isn't great but it's less disruptive than (a) because there is a majority hashpower definitely opted in.
BIP149 on the other had does not guarantee a chain split since that could only happen if a miner deliberately takes action to manually create a segwit invalid block, which would be rejected by the economy. The incentives are different also, with BIP148 a chainsplit comes for free, regardless of if it lasts long or not. In BIP149, a miner would have to specifically take action to split and waste their money, which they could do at any time anyway. BIP149 is uncontroversial in the sense it is just a redeployment with guaranteed activation at the end, for a soft fork we are fairly sure people want and will upgrade to. The evidence is everywhere. UASFs deployed over a long time and a decent flagday are perfectly safe - all soft forks are enforced by nodes, even if activation is triggered by hashpower.
Anyway, we've got 8 months from now to review and think about BIP149 - it cannot be deployed until November. If you would like to show support for BIP149, feel free to add the following to your bitcoin.conf
uacomment=UASF-SegWit-BIP149
Note you can have multiple uacomments like:
uacomment=BIP8 uacomment=UASF-SegWit-BIP149 uacomment=UASF-SegWit-BIP148
You can find the bitcoin.conf file here
You can also just add this to a shortcut - create a shortcut (or edit the existing one you use) and add this to the end: -uacomment=UASF-SegWit-BIP149
e.g. (just add the property to the end like this):
"C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe" -uacomment=UASF-SegWit-BIP149 if you are using Windows.
You can also just add uacomments as multiple command line/shortcut arguments like
-uacomment=BIP8 -uacomment=UASF-SegWit-BIP149 -uacomment=UASF-SegWit-BIP148
Then you can check here to see how your node is signalling at https://bitnodes.21.co/ will show something like: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8333 /Satoshi:0.14.1(UASF-SegWit-BIP149)/
If your node has synced and doesn't show using the link above make sure to enable forwarding of port 8333 so you accept incoming connections (if you want to that is) - in your client: go into settings / network and tick enable incoming connections and use upnp. You might have to add it to your firewall if this doesn't work. [taken from this user comment].

It is time to unite, organize and squeeze-out any possible viability for S2X/NYA.

And the simplest, cheapest, fastest and more efficient way to do it is this one:
Expose to the sunlight what DCG is and who is behind it
First, let's just post the links to the sites listing all the companies supporting the attack for quick reference:
https://coin.dance/poli
http://segwit.party/nya/
Then, let's post a list of the individuals still supporting this attack despite the overwhelming evidence presented to them about how and why S2X is not only totally pointless from the technical as well as economical (benefit for the whole ecosystem and not just a few) points of view and also about how and why S2X is an open attack on Bitcoin.
Those guys are pure greed, they don't care about the 7 billion of people on this planet. Expose them and don't give them your business. Starve the beast. They will regret sticking with the B2X altcoin that will go the BCH way (and all the other highjack attempts before them). Moneybadger don't care and only gets stronger and immunized after each snake-bite, that is as a system, but we, as individuals, do care and must be proactively working against this attack.
Actually >99% of the Bitcoin community supports the real Bitcoin. The centralized B2X-coin attack is only supported by a handful of rich crooks and the people they've managed to bribe with their deep pockets, so here they are:
Peter Smith, Nic Cary, Haipo Yang, Rick Falkvinge, Jon Matonis, Wences Casares, Tony Gallippi, Mike Belshe, Ryan X Charles, Brian Hoffman/Sam Patterson/Chris Pacia (and all OB1 team), Gavin Andresen, Jeff Garzik, Mike Hearn, Roger Ver, Jihan Wu, John Mcaffe, Craig Wright, Barry Silbert, Larry Summers, Blythe Masters, Stephen Pair, Erik Voorhees, Vinny Lingham, Olivier Janssens, Brian Armstrong, Jeremy Allaire, Peter Vessenes, Bruce Wagner, Brock Pierce, Aaron Voisine/Adam Traidman/Aaron Lasher (Breadwallet team), Glenn Hutchins and Jiang Zhuoer.
DCG (Digital Currency Group) is the company spearheading the Segwit2x movement. The CEO of DCG is Barry Silbert, a former investment banker, and Mastercard is an investor in DCG.
Let's have a look at the people that control DCG:
http://dcg.co/who-we-are/
Three board members are listed, and one Board "Advisor." Three of the four Members/advisors are particularly interesting:
Glenn Hutchins: Former Advisor to President Clinton. Hutchins sits on the board of The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where he was reelected as a Class B director for a three-year term ending December 31, 2018. Yes, you read that correctly, currently sitting board member of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Barry Silbert: CEO of DCG (Digital Currency Group, funded by Mastercard) who is also an Ex investment Banker at (Houlihan Lokey)
And then there's the "Board Advisor,"
Lawrence H. Summers:
"Chief Economist at the World Bank from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, Summers was appointed Undersecretary for International Affairs of the United States Department of the Treasury under the Clinton Administration. In 1995, he was promoted to Deputy Secretary of the Treasury under his long-time political mentor Robert Rubin. In 1999, he succeeded Rubin as Secretary of the Treasury. While working for the Clinton administration Summers played a leading role in the American response to the 1994 economic crisis in Mexico, the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and the Russian financial crisis. He was also influential in the American advised privatization of the economies of the post-Soviet states, and in the deregulation of the U.S financial system, including the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Summers
Seriously....The segwit2x deal is being pushed through by a Company funded by Mastercard, Whose CEO Barry Silbert is ex investment banker, and the Board Members of DCG include a currently sitting member of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the Ex chief Economist for the World Bank and a guy responsible for the removal of Glass Steagall.
It's fair to call these guys "bankers" right?
So that's the Board of DCG. They're spearheading the Segwit2x movement. As far as who is responsible for development, my research led me to "Bitgo". I checked the "Money Map" https://i.redd.it/15auzwkq3hiz.png And sure enough, DCG is an investor in Bitgo.
(BTW, make sure you take a good look take a look at the money map and bookmark it for reference later, ^ it is really helpful.)
"Currently, development is being overseen by bitcoin security startup BitGo, with help from other developers including Bloq co-founder Jeff Garzik."
https://www.coindesk.com/bitcoins-segwit2x-scaling-proposal-miners-offer-optimistic-outlook/
So Bitgo is overseeing development of Segwit2x with Jeff Garzick. Bitgo has a product/service that basically facilitates transactions and supposedly prevents double spending. It seems like their main selling point is that they insert themselves as middlemen to ensure Double spending doesn't happen, and if it does, they take the hit, of course for a fee, so it sounds sort of like the buyer protection paypal gives you:
"Using the above multi-signature security model, BitGo can guarantee that transactions cannot be double spent. When BitGo co-signs a BitGo Instant transaction, BitGo takes on a financial obligation and issues a cryptographically signed guarantee on the transaction. The recipient of a BitGo Instant transaction can rest assured that in any event where the transaction is not ultimately confirmed in the blockchain, and loses money as a result, they can file a claim and will be compensated in full by BitGo."
Source: https://www.bitgo.com/solutions
So basically, they insert themselves as middlemen, guarantee your transaction gets confirmed and take a fee. What do we need this for though when we have a working blockchain that confirms payments in the next block already? 0-conf is safe when blocks aren't full and one confirmation should really be good enough for almost anyone on the most POW chain. So if we have a fully functional blockchain, there isn't much of a need for this service is there? They're selling protection against "The transaction not being confirmed in the Blockchain" but why wouldn't the transaction be getting confirmed in the blockchain? Every transaction should be getting confirmed, that's how Bitcoin works. So in what situation does "protection against the transaction not being confirmed in the blockchain" have value?
Is it possible that the Central Bankers that control development of Segwit2x plan to restrict block size to benefit their business model just like our good friends over at Blockstream attempted to do, although unsuccessfully as they were not able to deliver a working L2 in time?
It looks like Blockstream was an attempted corporate takeover to restrict block size and push people onto their L2, essentially stealing business away from miners. They seem to have failed, but now it almost seems like the Segwit2x might be a culmination of a very similar problem.
Also worth noting these two things, pointed out by Adrian-x:
  1. MasterCard made this statement before investing in DCG and Blockstream. (Very evident at 2:50 - enemy of digital cash watch the whole thing.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu2mofrhw58
  2. Blockstream is part of the DCG portfolio and the day after the the NYA Barry personal thanked Adam Back for his assistant in putting the agreement together. https://twitter.com/barrysilbert/status/867706595102388224
So segwit2x takes power away from core, but then gives it to guess who...Mastercard and central bankers.
So, to recap:
Did we just spend so much time fighting and bickering with core that we totally missed the REAL takeover of Bitcoin, happening right before our eyes, by the likes of currently serving Federal Reserve Bank of New York Board Members?
Edit: Formatting.

A Crypto Fix for a Broken International Monetary System

The international monetary system is broken. Helping to fix it poses a huge opportunity for the cryptographers behind cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
Now they have one of the stewards of that system in their corner: Mark Carney, the outgoing Bank of England Governor.
A week ago in Jackson Hole, Mont., Carney told the Federal Reserve’s annual gabfest that central bankers could develop a network of national digital currencies to create a new, basket-managed “synthetic hegemonic currency.”
Carney’s proposal was mostly a thought exercise to inspire conversation around solutions to the dangerous imbalances fostered by the current system’s dependence on the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. The specifics were necessarily thin – any solution will be both technically and politically complicated, and even though he’ll depart the BOE in January, Carney’s status as a public official demands caution.
But I don’t share those constraints. So, let me lay out my own modest proposal for a cryptocurrency-based fix to a broken global financial system. Hint: it is not “buy bitcoin.”
I’m neither a trained economist nor a cryptographer, so I know this act of hubris will attract naysayers. I welcome criticisms and suggestions. I’m also quite certain I’m not the first to think of this, so I’m eager to hear of others working on similar projects.
The thing is I’ve been obsessed with both the structural failings of the global financial system and cryptocurrency for many years now. Three of my five books have covered those topics. It’s hard to bite my tongue.

Fixing the global currency system

I think that instead of creating a whole new global currency, central bankers should work to develop digital currency interoperability. We need a system of decentralized exchange through which businesses in different countries can use smart contracts to create automated escrow agreements and protect themselves against exchange rate volatility. With algorithms that achieve atomic swaps now available and with other advances in cross-chain interoperability, I believe we’ll soon have the technology to remove foreign exchange risk from international trade without relying on an intermediating currency such as the dollar.
Here’s how it might work: A hypothetical importer in Russia could strike a deal with an exporter from China and agree to a future payment, denominated in Chinese renminbi, based on the latter’s prevailing exchange rate with the Russian ruble. Relying on an interoperability protocol that’s commonly integrated into each party’s preferred digital national currency – either in privately run stablecoins or central bank-issued digital currencies – the two firms could then establish a smart contract that “trustlessly” locks up the required renminbi payment in decentralized escrow. If delivery and contract fulfillment are confirmed, the payment is released to the Chinese exporter. If not, the funds revert to the Russian importer at the same, initial conversion rate.
In this scenario, both parties are protected against adverse exchange rate movements. Yet, despite the trust gap between them, there is no need to intermediate the payment through dollars, and no need for either party to take out a forward contract, FX option or some other expensive exchange rate hedge.
Of course, the importer would suffer the opportunity cost of locking up otherwise valuable working capital for a few months. But private banks could mitigate that with collateralized short-term loans on terms that would be a lot cheaper than the current cost of currency hedging. Alternatively, if the smart contract is executed on a proof-of-stake blockchain, the locked-up funds could be employed to earn cryptocurrency staking rewards.
What would central banks’ roles be?
Well, for one, they could backstop the entire credit and/or staking model. Providing liquidity or guarantees to banks’ trade finance businesses would be a more constructive use of domestic money supply than applying it to rainy-day funds of U.S. Treasuries and other dollar assets.
Secondly, they’d be charged with assuring the trustworthiness of the interoperability protocol. Whether central banks would endorse and regulate privately developed protocols such as Tendermint’s Cosmos, Parity Technologies’ Polkadot or Ripple’s Interledger, or whether they would commission a multilateral body to build and manage a single official system, there’s no getting around an oversight role for public sector policymakers.
(Don’t worry, crypto libertarians, no one’s taking away your bitcoin in this scenario. In fact, since central bankers will retain their own monetary sovereignty, with exchange rates continuing to fluctuate, bitcoin’s appeal as a “digital gold” alternative to domestic currencies could well be enhanced.)

A broken system

Let’s be clear: if foreign trade no longer requires dollar intermediation, the U.S.-centric global economy will suffer a massive impact, perhaps bigger even than the 1971 “Nixon Shock,” when the dollar was unpegged from gold.
The entire reserve currency system, in which foreign central banks own U.S. government bonds as a backstop and multinational companies hold large parts of their balance sheets in dollars, is based on the need to protect against exchange rate losses. If that risk is removed, the edifice would, in theory, come down.
Yet, as Carney rightly points out, continuing with dollar hegemony is not tenable, either. The system is broken. Whenever global investors get the jitters they rushen masse into “safe haven” dollar assets – even when, as with President Trump’s trade war with China, U.S. policy is the cause of their malaise.
This process, which has become progressively more acute with each financial crisis, causes huge distortions, economic dysfunction and political turmoil. And with economies slowing and the worldwide value of bonds carrying negative yields now at $17 trillion, we now face worrying signs of another crisis. This time, traditional central bank policy could be powerless.
When another crisis comes, the dollar-based system will generate a predictable vicious cycle. The dollar will rapidly rise. This will hurt U.S. exporters, which further stir the mercantile instincts of anti-free traders such as Trump and fuel risks of a destructive tit-for-tat currency war.
Meanwhile, emerging markets will suffer capital flight as a rising dollar raises the risk of debt defaults in those countries. Their central banks will respond by jacking up interest rates to prop up their domestic currencies, but this will choke their economies at a time when they require easier, not tighter, monetary policy. Unemployment will surge and governments will topple.
The current system breeds what former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke dubbed the “global savings glut” as developing countries squirrel money into dollar reserves that could otherwise be used for domestic development.
In the U.S., it creates the countervailing effect of massive deficits – in other words, sky-high debt. Far from being the “exorbitant privilege” once described by French Finance Minister Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, the dollar’s reserve status is an American curse. It creates artificially low U.S. interest rates, which misprices credit risks and fuels bubbles – see: the 2008 housing crisis.
Worst of all, the dollar system undermines democracy and diminishes economic sovereignty. The performance of every economy hinges on U.S. Federal Reserve policies. Yet the Fed’s low inflation/maximum employment mandate is defined only by the U.S. economic outlook. This policy mismatch makes it much harder for governments to pursue effective measures to create opportunities for all.
When things really go sour, the Fed belatedly and reluctantly becomes the world’s lender of last resort, pumping dollars into the world’s banks via their New York subsidiaries. That’s how we ended up with the “quantitative easing” surfeit after the last crisis, money that went into financial assets, London real estate and fine art, but did little to boost the earning power of the middle class.
These policy failures have bred a populist backlash against globalization, manifest in the U.K.’s Brexit crisis and President Trump’s adversarial trade policies. Yet the reality is that capital flows are more globalized than ever and increasingly beating to the drum of the U.S. dollar.
So, yes, we need change. The question is how and in what time frame?

Violent or managed change?

The solution I described could be adopted abruptly and disruptively or it could be cooperatively managed for a smoother transition.
Under the first scenario, let’s consider Russia and China, the two countries I deliberately chose for my explanatory example, since they are believed to be further ahead than most in developing fiat digital currencies. Both would love to do away with dollar dependence. Could they go it alone and jointly devise a bilateral, cross-chain smart contract between a digital renminbi and a digital ruble? Sure. Would other countries follow suit? Maybe. Such an uncontrolled retreat from dollars could do huge harm to the U.S. and the overall global economy.
That’s why I think central banks should heed Carney’s call and work together on a solution. They could coordinate the gradual introduction of digital currencies, selectively managing access and applying differential interest rates to discourage an exodus from shaky banks. They could also charge the IMF with seeking a global standard for cross-chain interoperability.
Regardless, the disruptive technologies behind digital currencies, stablecoins and decentralized exchanges will advance. It’s a ticking time bomb.
Some central bankers, led by Carney – and now, Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker, who said in a Wharton Business School podcast that stablecoins are “inevitable” – get it. Others need to learn fast.
